Protect Planet Earth for yourself and generations to come by encouraging your family members and friends to turn the water off while they’re brushing their teeth (at least twice a day).

That’s all you have to do to Make Every Drop Count and be a good environmental citizen.

Depending on where your water resources come from, turning off the water while brushing your teeth can have a positive impact on springs, rivers, and wetland habitats for wildlife that would otherwise be damaged by water treatment plants. The impacts from taking water out of processing can be lessened in small ways that will positively affect the future of Planet Earth.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says, “The average bathroom faucet flows at a rate of two (2) gallons per minute. Turning off the tap while brushing your teeth in the morning and at bedtime can save up to eight (8) gallons of water per day, which equals 240 gallons a month!”

This equals a savings of 2,880 gallons of water each year for every individual in the United States who takes this simple step. You, your family, and your friends can participate in protecting our nation’s limited water supply and your children’s future every time everyone brushes their teeth.

You’ll have a better chance of saving your teeth, too. Flossing and brushing every surface of every tooth and brushing your gums every time you eat are your primary defenses against periodontal disease. Seeing your dentist or periodontist regularly is your next best defense.

Make a difference and ensure efficient use of our water supply. A conscious effort to turn off the water while you brush your teeth will use water more efficiently to preserve water supplies for future generations and protect our planet’s environment.

Visit www.epa.gov/watersense/ to learn more ways to use water and energy more efficiently.

What I know for sure is that it’s all connected.

Redheads are back in the news. This week NBC reported that redheads are more sensitive to pain that people with other hair colors. People with red hair need 19 percent more painkillers than the greater population.

Research published in the Journal of American Dental Association (July 2009) found that painful experiences at the dentist might cause more anxiety for men and women with red hair, who were twice as likely to avoid dental care than people with dark hair. People with red hair need larger doses of anesthesia and are twice as likely to avoid going to the dentist than those with other hair colors.

Dr. Daniel Sessler, an Outcomes Research Department chair at The Cleveland Clinic in Ohio said, “They require more generalized anesthesia, localized anesthesia. The conventional doses fail. They have bad experiences at the dentist and because of the bad experiences, they could avoid dental care.”

Get the nitrous! Read my July 2009 post for more information: http://gotteethguide.com/redheads-are-more-sensitive-to-tooth-pain/#more-731

For some of you, the occasion calls for the illustrious “green beer” enjoyed at your favorite Irish pub, but if you are in the process of whitening your teeth, you may want to rethink the color of your beverage.

During the whitening process the pores of the enamel are opened from the use of bleaching agents, allowing the hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide to enter the dentin layer of the tooth. It is very important that during this time you avoid foods and beverages that contain high levels of pigment, such as yellow mustard, grape juice, red wine, tomato sauce… you get the point.
So why is “green beer” a “no no” for people who are whitening their teeth? The addition of the green food coloring to your ale making it that beautiful Irish green, could penetrate the tooth resulting in a green tinge to the teeth; not the results you were expecting! In place of green beer, consider an Irish feast for dinner, just hold the mustard!

Beets are nature’s simple, unassuming, deliciously sweet, deep dark ruby red, low fat delivery system for calcium, potassium, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and sugar with an earthy flavor and enough nutritional value to make them vital for our oral and overall health.

They are a colorful winter root vegetable that have become available all year in red, yellow, orange, white, and variegated. First documented in 8th Century BC, Mesopotamia, beets were used in folk medicine for the treatment of fevers and constipation in Ancient Greece and Medieval Europe.

As I wax poetic about the beet, I recall homemade bowls of borscht on my mother’s dining room table with dollops of sour cream in their middles. Pickled beets, beet juice, and beets in salads and curries are popular in America, South America, Europe, Eastern Europe, India, and some parts of Africa.

Beets are sold with and without leaves in supermarkets, produce stores, flea markets, and farmer’s markets. The leaves and stems provide nutritional value when steamed or stir fried.

If you find yourself on a fresh beet binge, don’t be surprised if your urine turns reddish/pink the next day. Don’t panic, it’s harmless, and remember what you ate. It happens to about 15% of the population and I’m one of them. It’s caused by beet pigments.

Lop off the tops and tails, cover with water and cook whole. Bring them to a boil and lower to a simmer until tender while partially covered. Then rinse, cool, peel, slice, and eat them at room temperature to get the full flavor.

What I know for sure is that it’s all connected.

Please take action to protect Planet Earth for the rest of your life. Encourage all of your family members and friends to turn the water off every time they brush their teeth (at least twice a day). Run the water to rinse your mouth.

That’s it. That’s all you have to do to be a Water Warrior and a good environmental citizen.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says, “The average bathroom faucet flows at a rate of two gallons per minute. Turning off the tap while brushing your teeth in the morning and at bedtime can save up to 8 gallons of water per day, which equals 240 gallons a month!”

Applying this practice will equal a savings of 2,880 gallons of water each year for every individual in the United States who takes this simple step.

This means that you, your family, and your friends can participate in protecting the future of our nation’s limited water supply and your children’s future each time you brush your teeth.

You’ll have a better chance of saving your teeth, too. Flossing and brushing every surface of every tooth and brushing your gums every time you eat are your primary defenses against periodontal disease. Seeing your dentist or periodontist regularly is your next best defense.

As model citizens of Planet Earth, you are the trustees of the little things that will make a big difference and ensure efficient use of our water supply.

It’s easy. Make a conscious effort to turn off the water while you brush your teeth. Each person in each family can use water more efficiently to preserve water supplies for future generations and protect our planet’s environment.

Visit www.epa.gov/watersense/ to learn more ways to use water and energy more efficiently.

Keep smiling.

There’s also physical, heart, and soul pain – and it’s always worse at night. Your quality of life declines and suffers as your pain increases and becomes extreme (chronic).

Take the meds, have the periodontal surgery, talk to a trusted friend, get therapy, see a specialist, bite the brownie, scoop the ice cream; do whatever it takes it takes to heal yourself.

This is the time to spend money before it’s too late and pain becomes your life. This is the only time to go into debt if you must.

I experienced extreme neck and left shoulder pain in January and February – and I’m left-handed so I’ve been unable to blog. I’m working on it and I want you to work on it, too.

I’m not abandoning my blog. I have much to share and I hope to back soon. I’d love to hear how you overcame your pain.

What I know for sure is that its all connected.
