Earth Day 2010: Save Water and Your Teeth.
It’s Earth Day 2010. Please take action to protect Planet Earth for the rest of your life. Encourage all of your family members and friends to turn the water off every time they brush their teeth (at least twice a day). Run the water to rinse your mouth.
That’s it. That’s all you have to do to be a Water Warrior and a good environmental citizen.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says, “The average bathroom faucet flows at a rate of two gallons per minute. Turning off the tap while brushing your teeth in the morning and at bedtime can save up to 8 gallons of water per day, which equals 240 gallons a month!”
Depending on where your water resources come from, turning off the water while brushing your teeth can have a positive impact on springs, rivers, and wetland habitats for wildlife that would otherwise be damaged by water treatment plants. The impacts from taking water out of processing can be lessened in small ways that will positively affect the future of Planet Earth.
Applying this practice will equal a savings of 2,880 gallons of water each year for every individual in the United States who takes this simple step. [Read more →]

The $2 Million Case of the Pulled Teeth!
Elizabeth Smith only wanted three teeth in her upper jaw removed. Oops! A dentist at a Florence, S.C., dental clinic pulled all 16 of her upper teeth - by mistake.
A jury awarded the 28-year old woman a $2 million verdict.
Of course, she has trouble eating, covers her mouth when talking, and may be experiencing low self-esteem issues. Dental implants will cost about $80,000, which the jury money will cover, in addition to the patient’s shock, embarrassment, and trauma.
The award consisted of $500,000 in actual damages and $1.5 million in punitive damages. The jury ordered Sexton Dental Clinic to pay most of the damages, and one of its dentists, Robert Scott, to pay the rest. This dental error is a rare occurrence and the clinic’s attorney says it’s considering an appeal. Really?

Cigarette smoking addiction causes gum disease.
Smoking cigarettes, pipe tobacco, marijuana (even with a hookah pipe), cocaine, meth, candy (kids are smoking it to get high), or anything under the kitchen sink is hazardous to your health.
I won’t go into the amount of money that went into marketing cigarettes to get you addicted or government-protected lobbyists and cigarette companies keeping you addicted by adding more addictive chemicals to cigarettes annually so it’s harder to quit and then raising taxes on cigarettes. What are “they” smoking? [Read more →]

Lies people tell their dentist.
1. I brush my teeth every morning and every night.
2. I floss at least twice a day.
3. Of course, I took all of my antibiotics.
Don’t bother lying. Your dental hygienist will know if you’re not brushing and flossing or taking prescribed antibiotics. You will be poked, prodded, and measured during every visit.
More importantly, don’t lie to yourself and risk gum disease and tooth loss.
Keep smiling.

Denture Cream Consumer Alert
The consumer alert targeted 35 million Americans who use denture creams containing zinc.
1. Use only 3 to 4 dime-sized dots on your denture at one time.
2. Do not overfill your denture. You are using too much cream if it oozes out of your denture.
3. Do not use denture cream overnight.
4. If your denture does not fit properly, have it relined or get a new one.
Long exposure to too much denture cream means high doses of zinc in your body. High levels of zinc in your body drive down the natural amount of copper in your body, which can adversely affect your spine, which may put you in a wheelchair.
Super Polygrip, owned by Glaxo Smith Klein, and Fixodent, owned by Proctor & Gamble, were specifically mentioned.
Do you think that if a company does not list the ingredients in a product, it has something to hide?

Can periodontal laser surgery be done in a mouth with dental implants?
Periodontal laser surgery is used to treat periodontal disease, which affects the gums around natural teeth. Some of those natural teeth (like what’s left of mine) have amalgam (silver) fillings. No problem.
Lasers are site specific and if a natural tooth happens to be next to a titanium dental implant and your periodontist is experienced, it is safe. Periodontal laser surgery is a great choice: no bleeding, no stitches, almost no pain, and faster recovery. [Read more →]

Dental insurance needs a few good teeth.
Dental and periodontal cleanings help keep your teeth and gums healthy.
The bad news is that millions of Americans have lost their jobs along with their dental and health insurance. COBRA benefits are unaffordable for most people who can’t afford to pay out of pocket to see a dental professional even once a year.
The scary news is that there are hundreds of discount dental providers using scare tactics and jockeying to get your money. Know what your money is buying. Read the fine print.
The good news is that AARP’s Dental Insurance Plan offers three (3) free dental or periodontal cleanings every year. Rates average around $43 per month for single coverage with discounted premiums for two people and families. Plan prices, like all dental coverage, vary by state and region. [Read more →]

Your teeth and your heart are linked.
February is National Heart Health Month. I’m telling you again that poor dental health is linked to increased heart disease.
“A growing body of research suggests an association between severe gum disease and certain serious health conditions, such as heart disease – the number one cause of death in U.S. women,” said Altagracia Chavez, MD, Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Cleveland Clinic Heart Center, Cleveland, Ohio, and member of WomenHeart’s Scientific Advisory Council.
Please make an appointment with your dental professional now.
What I know for sure is that it’s all connected.

Periodontal disease doesn’t care how old you are.
A 23-year old man I worked with was spitting blood when he went to the dentist. He had the beginning of periodontal disease. They caught it in time.
A 43-year old woman I worked with didn’t go to the dentist. Now she has chronic periodontal disease, she needs periodontal surgery, and she may lose her two front bottom teeth.
If you’re not brushing and flossing your teeth at least twice a day and seeing a dental professional at least once a year, you may be at risk for periodontal disease.
Make dental health your priority. You can never begin too early or too late in life.
Keep smiling.
