Avoid “green teeth” on St. Patrick’s Day.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! For some of you, the occasion calls for the illustrious “green beer” enjoyed at your favorite Irish pub, but if you are in the process of whitening your teeth, you may want to rethink the color of your beverage.

During the whitening process the pores of the enamel are opened from the use of bleaching agents, allowing the hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide to enter the dentin layer of the tooth. It is very important that during this time you avoid foods and beverages that contain high levels of pigment, such as yellow mustard, grape juice, red wine, tomato sauce… you get the point. How to avoid teeth whitening problems.

teeth whiteningEveryone I know is complaining about the color of their teeth. They’re too yellow, they’re too brown, they’re not white enough.

When I ask, “When was the last time you had your teeth cleaned?” they can’t remember.  A friend said, “The teeth cleaning strips aren’t working and if they work at all, they leave vertical whitish lines on my teeth.”

1. Get your teeth professionally cleaned just before you get a whitening treatment.
2. Whitening a decaying tooth can allow the peroxide to sink into a cavity, causing nerve damage.
3. If your teeth are professionally cleaned first, there’s no tartar or plaque to interfere with the bleaching process.
4. Your teeth might be so white after a professional teeth cleaning that you won’t need a whitening treatment.

If you haven’t had your teeth cleaned this year, make your appointment now and make your next appointment before leaving the dental office.

What I know for sure is that it’s all connected.

Lies people tell their dentist.

Gum disease is a silent, aggressive disease that can damage your gums and take your teeth. The most common lies people tell their dental professionals are:

1. I brush my teeth every morning and every night.
2. I floss at least twice a day.
3. Of course, I took all of my antibiotics.

Don’t bother lying. Your dental hygienist will know if you’re not brushing and flossing or taking prescribed antibiotics. You will be poked, prodded, and measured during every visit.

More importantly, don’t lie to yourself and risk gum disease and tooth loss.

Keep smiling.

2 minutes to healthier teeth and gums

2 mintuesYou’ll get better results for energy expended if you brush your teeth for two full minutes at least twice a day.

Use a kitchen timer. Two minutes is longer than you think. This tiny change can improve your dental health.

If you have a full upper or lower denture, you only need to brush for one minute.

Keep smiling.

Teeth are the consumer accessories of the 21st century.

consumer smile accessoryThanks to Hollywood and advertising, our teeth have the power of totems and are worthy of our respect. In his book “The Excruciating History of Dentistry,” James Wynbrandt wrote, “Focus has turned to glorification of the tooth…symbols of power and glamour, and the mouth itself, the ultimate consumer accessory.”

For all of you who may be losing the battle against periodontal disease, it’s time to begin discussing the affects of tooth loss and denture replacement; an emotional crisis for millions of people.

What I know for sure is that it’s all connected.
